SRINAGAR:

Coronavirus cases in India’s occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K) region have crossed the 7,000 mark, including 94 deaths, officials said on Sunday.

As many as 127 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the national total to 7,093, according to the latest government data.

Since June 13, the data reveals, around 2,700 cases have been recorded while 41 people, including a 15-day-old baby, have died.

The Kashmir Doctors’ Association has warned of community transmission, saying more than 90% of the region’s population is susceptible to infection.

Dr. Suhail Naik, who heads the association, told Anadolu Agency that recent figures indicate that the virus has arrived in the community and will spread amid easing restrictions.

“We cannot sustain the excessive case load in our underdeveloped health systems…the only available remedy is social distancing, hygiene and prevention,” he said.

While educational establishments remain closed and public transport is still suspended in the region, some businesses have reopened their doors.

As the pandemic crisis looms, Indian forces have continued their human rights violations in the valley, killing more than 130 freedom fighters in more than 40 firefights in 2020 so far.
