As many as 16,506 students of the Morning, Evening and Executive Masters of Business Administration programs of the University of Karachi have not paid their long-standing dues of over Rs 2,101.5 million, from 2020 to 2024.

The figure, the university said in a statement released on Wednesday, for defaulting students does not include scholars enrolled in MPhil/PhD and other postgraduate programmes.

This data was shared at a meeting chaired by KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.

The meeting members were concerned that a whopping amount of Rs 2,101,486,351 was yet to be paid by the 16,506 defaulting students.

They recommended that the debtors should not be allowed to appear for the exams and their admit cards should not be issued under any conditions. The proposal to cancel the registrations/degrees of defaulting graduate students was also discussed in the meeting.

The participants were informed that 22,575 fee vouchers were issued to morning students, out of which 13,205 students have paid their tuition fees and the rest of the 9,370 students are still in default of payment.

The fees of over Rs 1,558.87 million were supposed to be collected as fees, but over Rs 567.32 million fees were paid by the students and the amount of over Rs 991.54 million was not not yet been deposited by students as tuition fees. .

They were told that only 36.39% of the total tuition amount came from students.

Members were informed that 13,425 fee vouchers have been generated for evening program students and 6,543 students have paid their dues while 6,882 students have not paid their fees so far.

An amount of over Rs 1,435.04 million was charged by the campus as fees and the collection was over Rs 385.19 million. However, over Rs 1,049.84 million is still pending and only 26.84 per cent of the total fees have been deposited by students.

It was also reported that 767 fee vouchers were issued to students enrolled in the EMBA (weekend) program and 513 students have paid their fees while 254 students are still in default.

KU charged an amount of over Rs 100.30 million as fees and received payment of over Rs 40.20 million in return, and the amount of over Rs 60.10 million is still payable by the failing students. According to statistics provided to the meeting participants, 40.08% of the total fee amount has been collected so far.

The data shows that a total of 36,767 fee vouchers have been generated and 20,261 students have paid their fees, but 16,506 students are yet to submit their fees.

KU had charged over Rs 3,094.20 million as fees and collected over Rs 992.71 million from students, while the amount of over Rs 2,101.5 million is yet to been recovered from defaulting students.

According to the fee collection statistics for the evening program, in 2024, a total of 2,522 fee vouchers have been generated and 1,541 students have paid their fees, while 981 students are still in default, which means 60, 10% of active students have paid their contributions.

Meanwhile, in 2023, around 3,912 tuition credentials were issued, 2,071 students paid their tuition fees, 1,840 students defaulted, which means 52.95% of students paid their tuition fees .

In 2022, approximately 3,272 tuition vouchers were issued and 1,359 students settled their payments, which shows that 41.53% of students paid their tuition fees.

It was stated in the meeting that in 2021, around 3,231 fee vouchers were issued, 1,260 students paid fees, but 1,971 students defaulted, which means only 39% of students paid their costs.

In 2020, KU issued 338 fee vouchers and 242 students paid their fees, but 96 students are in default, reflecting that 71.60% of students have paid their dues.

The members were also informed that 151 passed out students received tuition vouchers, among which 70 students have paid their dues and 81 ex-students are still defaulters, which shows that 46.36 per cent of the ex-students have paid the fees.

β€œThe defaulting students have neglected all opportunities provided by the KU administration to clear the pending dues and it is now decided that the evening program students who have cleared all their dues will get the admit cards and be allowed to take the exams,” the statement added.

The meeting was attended by the Evening Director, Prof. Dr. Imran Ahmad Siddiqui, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Shaista Tabassum, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Musarrat Jahan Yousuf, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Dr. Muhammad Haris. Shoib, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Professor Dr. Zahid Ali Zahidi, the Student Advisor Dr. Nosheen Raza and the Chief Financial Officer Syed Jehanzeb. The meeting took place on Wednesday at the KU VC secretariat.
