ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has withdrawn its previous notification proposing restrictions on passengers bringing more than one mobile phone from abroad.

The decision follows directives from FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial who ordered an immediate halt to the implementation of the amendments to the Customs Baggage Rules, 2006.

This means that travelers will continue to be allowed to take up to two mobile phones, in accordance with current regulations.

The FBR chairman also ordered withdrawal of the proposed ban on commercial items worth more than $1,200.

Instead, it was decided that the rules would be reviewed after consultations and resubmitted for approval.

What did the notification say?

On Monday, the FBR had issued a notification proposing stricter changes in the baggage system.

The notification suggested allowing only one mobile phone for personal use, with additional devices subject to confiscation.

It also sought to classify goods worth more than $1,200 as commercial, prohibiting their release even with payment of duties, taxes or fines.

The notification said that recommendations on amendments could be made within seven days, adding that they would not be accepted after the stipulated period.
