PIA plans to expand its fleet to revamp its flight operations Blogging Sole

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced plans to expand its fleet and improve its operations following the introduction of a newly refurbished Airbus 320, with the aim of strengthening its competitiveness in domestic and international markets.

The national carrier, which holds 23% of Pakistan’s domestic aviation market, has faced challenges with its fleet of 34 planes to compete with global competition. Despite agreements with 87 countries and access to prime landing slots, PIA has struggled to offer direct flights.

“The 11th Airbus 320 AP-BOM has been integrated into the operational fleet with new engines, paint and cabin upgrades,” PIA said in a statement. It also plans to restore grounded Boeing 777s and ATRs in the coming days.

The airline has highlighted improvements to its flight network and product quality as part of its recovery strategy. This week, PIA introduced internet on board flights on domestic routes, which it says is gaining popularity among passengers.

Khurram Mushtaq, CEO, PIA, said, “PIA’s flight schedule has achieved 90% regularity. Operational fleet expansion and product improvement measures are part of our commitment to passengers.

The airline confirmed it would resume flights to Europe in January, starting with Paris, after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifted a ban imposed in 2020. The suspension follows concerns over Pakistan’s compliance with international aviation standards.

The ban costs PIA 40 billion rupees ($144 million) a year. Efforts to take the struggling carrier private earlier this year failed, with only one bid falling well short of expectations.

PIA’s continued efforts to modernize its fleet and improve the quality of its services are aimed at restoring its reputation and financial stability.
