Police on Monday registered a case against the bus driver who allegedly killed a woman after hitting the motorcycle in Ayesha Manzil, Karachi, following her husband’s complaint.

The deadly collision occurred while the couple was traveling from Sohrab Goth to Mujahid Colony on motorbikes. A speeding bus came from the Ayesha Manzil Bridge and hit the motorcycle, according to police in the port city.

“My wife, Bushra, was crushed under the tires of the bus and I was also injured,” the complainant said.

According to authorities, the bus driver responsible for the accident – which occurred the day before – fled the scene and abandoned his bus which was set on fire by a crowd angry over the incident.

The search for the escapee is ongoing, police added.

In early December, Karachi police chief Javed Alam Odho said a meeting had decided that given the sharp rise in road accidents in the city, something out of the routine should be done.

Odho said measures would be taken to prevent road accidents to improve the traffic system.

As many as 479 fatal accidents took place in the city this year and 345 FIRs were registered. FIRs are not registered for certain incidents, or cases are not registered for deaths due to own fault or motorcycle skidding.

Dump trucks, tankers, minibuses, trailers and large vehicles are involved in 50% of accidents. It is necessary to control heavy vehicles, and lawsuits have increased for negligence due to heavy traffic and violations of laws.

About 57 percent of accidents are due to the negligence of small vehicles, he said, noting that a total of 470 people have lost their lives in accidents this year, 50 percent of them in Keamari, West and Malir.

Odho said more than 7,000 drivers were arrested and cases registered against 350 others.
