In the occupied West Bank, the Israeli settlement of Karnei Shomron is one of more than a hundred dug out on Palestinian territory. Today, more than 700,000 Israelis live in scattered communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which the United Nations describes as illegal. About 15% of the settlers are American.
