As snow approaches, it is essential to prepare yourself and your vehicle for safe travel.
Here is a checklist for winter driving:
Make sure your car has essential cold weather gear like food, water, warm clothes, a scraper, blankets, medicine and a flashlight.
Check tire pressure, bring an extra tire, and use winter wiper fluid. Keep your fuel tank half full and make sure your lights are working.
Avoid unnecessary travel in extreme conditions. Drive slowly for best traction and control. Maintain a safe distance (5 to 6 seconds) and avoid complete stops when possible.
Have your vehicle checked, monitor weather conditions, tell someone your route, and avoid driving in the snow at night. Always stay in communication with your loved ones.
Stay with your car because it shelters you, insulate yourself with available materials and save energy.
Signal distress with a brightly colored cloth and avoid running the engine for too long to save fuel. Also make sure your exhaust pipe is clear to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
