ISLAMABAD: At least 10 people were killed after a bus met with an accident and overturned on the M-14 highway near Fateh Jang, motorway police said on Monday.
Seven people were injured in the accident caused by the driver’s negligence, said the motorway police spokesperson.
The ill-fated bus was traveling from Bahawalpur to Islamabad. The bodies, as well as the injured, were transferred to THQ Fateh Jang Hospital, the spokesperson added.
Reacting to the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Meanwhile, Highway Police Inspector General Riffat Mukhtar has ordered an immediate investigation into the bus accident.
Directing to provide best medical facilities to the injured, the IG expressed sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families.
Bus accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan and frequently occur due to various reasons including driver negligence, road and weather conditions, etc.
Last month, a “speeding” bus carrying wedding guests plunged off a bridge into the Indus River, killing at least 14 people in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The bus was part of a wedding procession heading towards Chakwal district of Punjab when it fell into the river from Telchi bridge under Diamer district limits.
However, two people, including the bride, were rescued during the incident, authorities said.
Earlier, six people were killed and 20 others injured in Sherani, Balochistan, after a bus plunged into a ditch in Danasar area in September.
August saw at least two bus accidents, killing 25 people, after a bus carrying 30 passengers from Haveli Kahuta to Rawalpindi fell into a ditch near the Pana Bridge.
While at least eight people were killed and seven others injured after a passenger bus rammed into a trailer on the Sukkur-Multan highway near Malook Wali village in Ghotki.
