Mexico is based on five tectonic plates making it one of the most earthquake-vulnerable countries in the world, particularly on the Pacific coast.

In 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake, centered on the Pacific coast, devastated much of central and southern Mexico, killing thousands and causing severe damage in Mexico City.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake on September 19, 2017 killed 369 people, most of them in the capital.

Same day in 2022central Mexico was hit by another earthquake, just hours after millions of people took part in a simulated earthquake safety exercise. Impacts from the 7.6 magnitude earthquake extended as far as 1,500 miles to the north, where Four-foot-high waves began to churn inside a Death Valley cave called Devils Hole.
