Islamabad: electricity distribution companies have submitted requests to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to transfer a relief of more than 52 billion rupees to consumers of the quarterly adjustment mechanism.
According to the NEPRA, requests for requesting a total reduction of RS52.12 billion was received for the adjustment of the second quarter for the current financial year.
The requested adjustments include a reduction of 50.66 billion rupees of capacity costs and a decrease of RS 2.66 billion transmission and distribution losses.
However, an increase in Rs 2.69 billion was sought under operating and maintenance costs.
The adjustment for October-December 2024 will also be applicable to electric consumers K. The Nepra will run an audience on these requests on February 12, and the decision will have an impact on consumers across the country, including Karachi.
NEPRA sources said it was premature to determine how the electricity rate per unit would decrease before the hearing.
It is relevant to mention that the government had previously closed five independent power producers (PPI) with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts after negotiations.
The expected relief of more than 52 billion rupees is largely attributed to the closure of these PPI.
