The jostling occurred on Saturday evening while thousands of people were gathered at New Delhi station while waiting to get on a train. The incident occurred after some passengers have slipped and came across others while going down from a bridge that connects train platforms, the authorities said.

Prime minister Narendra Modi said he was “in distress by the stampede”.

“My thoughts go to all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the injured to have a quick recovery. The authorities help all those who have been affected by this stampede, “he said on the social platform X.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vahnaw said that an investigation had been ordered to find what had led to the stampede.
