FO sets up a crisis cell to help Pakistani in Myanmar, Thailand, after a deadly earthquake Blogging Sole

Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created a crisis management cell to help Pakistani nationals affected by the 7.7 coarse earthquake that struck Myanmar and certain parts of Thailand, killing more than 150 people and injuring hundreds more.

In an official declaration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with the inhabitants of Myanmar and Thailand in the aftermath of what it described as an “unprecedented natural calamity”.

The ministry asked the Pakistani embassies in Yangon and Bangkok to provide all the support and emergency aid necessary for nationals of the affected regions.

A dedicated crisis management unit (CMU) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad was also activated to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts to support Pakistanis in need.

Details and consequences of the earthquake

The powerful earthquake struck the ancient capital of Myanmar, Mandalay, around noon on Friday, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It was followed by a replica of 6.4 large in size a few minutes later.

The state broadcaster MRTV reported at least 144 deaths and 732 Myanmar injuries, with Mandalay – a city of 1.5 million and the former royal capital of the country – undergoing the weight of damage. Buildings, bridges and roads have been largely damaged, while rescue operations were underway in several areas.

In neighboring Thailand, at least nine people were killed in Bangkok, where a building under 33 -story construction collapsed. The rescuers continued to search for survivors trapped under the rubble.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the support of Pakistan to affected countries and assured Pakistani citizens that consular teams were pending to provide immediate relief if necessary.
