Karachi: A massive fire near Korangi Crossing in Karachi continued to rage for more than six hours despite the incessant efforts of firefighters and emergency teams. Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori led an uninterrupted water supply to help turn off the fire.

The infer, which would have previously broken out in a gas pipeline after being damaged during underground drilling, turned out to be extremely difficult to control. Firefighters used water and foam to turn off the flames, but their efforts were largely ineffective.

Speaking of Geo News, the senior firefighters Muhammad Zafar described the fire as “mysterious”, saying that he could not yet be determined which pipeline had been affected.

“The fire is mysterious. We still don’t know what pipeline it is,” he said.

Zafar also said that attempts to turn off the flames with water proved to be ineffective. “We pulsed water on the flames, but that continued to bounce back,” said Zafar.

The firefighter also declared that to control the conflagration, the authorities called teams from the Su Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on the site. However, the SSGC spokesman said that the company has no installation near the Korangi crossing. There is no gas pipeline either around the fire site, also noted the spokesperson.

Zafar suggested, saying: “The fire breaks out of a crater which must be sealed with earth.”

Given the fire scale, Zafar has also recommended: “We may need to use a Dumper truck or a helicopter to drop the ground on the flames.”

The Karachi Water and Swerage Corporation (KWSC) said an emergency at Landhi stop to ensure an uninterrupted water supply.

“The terminal manager is in constant contact with firefighters and rescue teams to maintain the persistent water supply,” confirmed a KWSC spokesperson.

Governor Tessori has expressed serious concerns about the situation, calling for immediate and effective action.

“We must take rapid measures to control this fire,” he said during a call to the fire department and the engineers on the site.

To further increase efforts, the governor assured fire managers that he would coordinate with the relevant authorities to organize a helicopter if necessary to drop the soil on the flames.

Meanwhile, the Governor called Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi and ordered him to ensure the immediate availability of all the necessary fire fighting resources, including air support.

The Governor of Sindh also praised the firefighters and the emergency intervention teams who continued their efforts despite the intensity of the fire and the challenges to turn it off.

“I salute those who risk their lives to turn off the fire,” said Governor Tessori.

No victim reported so far, firefighters do their best to control the situation and prevent other damage.
