In a progression of organ transplantation in Pakistan, the Dow university hospital succeeded in its 190th liver transplant under the leadership of international medical experts. Complex surgery involved a 23 -year -old donor who provided a part of 750 grams of his liver to his 42 -year -old uncle, the two people being in a stable state after the operation.
The operation started early Wednesday and continued until evening. It was broadcast live from the Dow University Theater at the Hall Seminar and broadcast via the official website and the university’s social media platforms, offering an educational opportunity for a large gathering of medical students and trainees.
The procedure was supervised by renowned international surgeons, including Professor John Lattina who has already visited Pakistan; And Professor John Fung, who visited the country for the first time. The two are affiliated with the Pritzker School of Medicine from the University of Chicago. The teachers provided valuable information to the Dow liver transplantation team, led by Dr Jehanzaib Haider, on advanced surgical techniques and global hepatic transplantation trends.
Vice-Chancellor of DOW University, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, ​​congratulated the team for successful transplant and expressed their appreciation to visiting international experts. The pro-vice chancellor, Professor Dr Jehan Ara Hassan, who was present during the live session, shared details on the patient’s history. The recipient, a 42 -year -old Shahdadkot resident underwent hepatic insufficiency due to the long -term infections of hepatitis B and D. His 23 -year -old nephew volunteered to give 750 grams of his liver, facilitating successful transplant.
Professor Hassan noted that with the support of the Sindh government, Dow University has now completed 190 liver transplants, all provided to patients. She also stressed that the approach of Pakistani society towards organ donation is often shaped by religious and cultural beliefs. In response, the DOW University develops a proposal as an organ donation bank to help improve accessibility and awareness.
She also announced that the Dow University of Health Sciences is hosting the first international conference in Pakistan on transplantation later this week.
