Friday, an earthquake of amplitude of 7.4 hit the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina, said the United States Geological Survey. There was no immediate report of damage or victims.
The Chilean authorities have published an evacuation alert for the entire coastal section of the Magellan Strait, in the far south of the country.
A tsunami warning was issued for the coastal areas at less than 185 miles from the epicenter, the Tsunami warning center of the National Service of the National US service saying that a series of dangerous waves was possible.
Waves measuring 1 to 3 meters (more than 3 to 9 feet) were expected in Chile and up to 1 meter high in Antarctica.
“We call for the evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region”, the president of Chile Gabriel Boric poster on social networks after an emergency service alertwhich also ordered evacuations in neighboring Antarctic areas.
Boric said that “all resources are available” to respond. “Right now, our duty is to prepare and listen to the authorities,” he wrote.
Photos and social media videos have shown that people calmly evacuating while the sirens presented themselves in the background, Reuters reported.

In the arenas of Punta, located in Chilean Patagonia and on the Strait of Magellan, which links the Oceans of the Atlantic and the Pacific, the streets are quickly filled with residents in search of shelters, according to images broadcast on local television.
The evacuation took place calmly and without panic. “We received the alert and we had to evacuate to work, but people are calm and well prepared,” Roberto RamÃrez told 24 hours a day.
The USGS said that the epicenter of the earthquake was under the ocean at 219 kilometers (173 miles) south of the Argentine city of Ushuaia, in the passage of Drake between Cape Horn and Antarctica.

In Ushuaia, considered the most southern city in the world, local authorities have suspended all types of nautical activities and navigation in the Beagle canal for at least three hours. No damage has been reported.
“The earthquake was felt mainly in the city of Ushuaia and, to a lesser extent, in the cities of the province,” local government reported. “Faced with these types of events, it is important to stay calm.”
The Antarctic Institute of Chile told Reuters that bases were evacuated. According to local authorities, around 2,000 people were evacuated.
