Mansehra: A car crashed into a ravine on Thursday, killing eight family members, including a man, his wife and four children, in the Matta Banda district of Lower Kohistan.
The car was going from Gilgit Baltistan (GB) to Punjab when the driver lost control of the steering and he plunged into the ravine while sailing on a steep turn on the Karakoram motorway, The news reported.
After a frantic hour attempt, the 1122 rescue staff, the police and local volunteers reached the accident site and took the dead at the Pattan district headquarters hospital for forensic formalities.
“We have moved the eight bodies in a nearby health facility, from where they will be sent to Rawalpindi,” said the district police officer, Lower Kohistan Taimur Khan, to journalists.
The DPO said that the accident occurred in a particularly dangerous section of the motorway adjacent to the Indus River. He congratulated the professionalism of rescue teams in the recovery of bodies and transport them to the hospital.
The victims were identified as Asif Iqbal from Rawalpindi, his wife Memona Iqbal, their four children and two parents, Aisha Siddique and Bushra Waseem.
“We have already advised drivers and motorists to exercise extreme caution while traveling through the mountainous field of Kohistan along the Karakoram motorway,” added Khan.
A Rescue 1122 manager Malik Sharif said that the fatal accident rate along the Karakoram motorway, in particular in the upper and lower district of Kohistan, has remained considerably high, largely because the drivers of other parts of the country were not familiar with difficult road conditions.
