Barry Deller, CEO of TV, Wide and Media Company, spent a contract in ABC, where he helped generalize the “Week” movie. “Whoever knows” (It will be published on May 20 by Simon & Schuster), Diller writes about his career, including a lesson on the limits of a lot of information – when it is instinct (such as, what makes a interesting movie from the week?) It may be a better prediction of success.

We were good in titles in the early days

Women in chains It was one of the favorites. It was a terrible movie, but it has a title that can be strengthened.

Scream, beautiful Peggy It was not bad, too.

Sometimes employees ask, “Is it commercial?” I would like to deal with them, because instead of using their instincts, they were trying to predict the passion of the audience, which I said at the time and say now again and again, simply not possible. The research is not used to help make decisions. There is no degree of research on ideas that deserve paper (or computer screen) printed on it. Data can tell you what It happenedNo, what It can happen or will happen. The data is often harmful to instinct, and I think this is true in making creative decisions, but many commercial decisions. PowerPoint enemy can be. The information is often narrowed only when you need to expand it in the spaces between information and real understanding. It does not give excessive training of our brains on data alone, and it can be a deterrent if it is the only component to make decisions. This is the problem of Master of Business Administration, who come armed with all work tools and case studies, but a simple human instinct. I do not think that the use of instinctive data instead of numerical, numerical or fact -based data to help make decisions is the most plateau process. A lot of information can carry excessive load, complexity, and ambiguity what is in the essence of any proposal: is it a good idea, and does it have any sound meaning?

You rarely get the ideal project or the ideal text. In all my experience, I may not read ten texts out of a thousand completely achieved, and they are so wonderful and solerable that you just scream, “make it!” Nevertheless, one of them was today in 1970 that Leonard Goldberg, who recently moved from ABC to manage a large television production company, said: “You must read this scenario at the present time.” It was called Brian songThe story of the deep bond between a black and white football player, who will die of cancer. I cried and read it. I called him and said: “We can only put it from here – it’s perfect – let’s.” It is often referred to as one of the best TV films that have ever produced – and one of the greatest sports films as well – was nominated for EMMYS nine and won five films. Another of the few times, Dan Curtis, a major product in ABC, sent a manuscript for an unpublished novel after it called Kolchak leaves. I read it within two or three hours – the contemporary story of the vampires in Las Vegas – and Dan said, “This is a good story as I have ever read.” What a great idea: Las Vegas, the most vibrant city at night – the perfect place for vampires to live.

From that novel that we made NightAnd that turns out to be so good that we held an offer for the ABC adults, who all said, “This is a great movie. We must make it out!” I fought that, saying: “Yes, it is a wonderful movie, but it is a Week movieAnd this is where he belongs. NightI was born with a complement (Strangler Night) And a TV series (Kolchak: Night Stalker) This was followed by two additional films for television and re -edition of the new series. All this is a good idea!
