A fire in a drug rehabilitation center in the Mexican state of violence Guanajuato killed 12 people and injured at least three others, authorities announced on Sunday.

The fire broke out early Sunday in the city of San Jose Iturbe, where the municipal government said that it was still investigating what had caused the deadly fire.

“We express our solidarity with the families of those who were killed while they were trying to overcome the outbuildings,” the municipal government said in a statement, adding that this will help pay the funeral costs of people killed.

Experts gathered evidence and questioned witnesses to establish “the reasons for the tragic incident”, the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office said.

The Mexican media reported that the fire victims had been locked up inside the rehabilitation center.
