LONDON: Hasan Nawaz Sharif, who is the son of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has been declared bankrupt by the High Court in London, according to court documents.
Hasan was declared bankrupt in a tax and liability case by the UK government’s Department of Taxation and Revenue, Geo News to understand.
The UK Gazette, which keeps public records, published details of the bankruptcy. It states that Hasan, a resident of Apartment 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, and the director of the company, was declared bankrupt by the High Court of Justice in Case No. 694 of 2023; filed on August 25, 2023. The bankruptcy order was entered on April 29, 2024 following an action brought by creditors for non-payment.
The civil case was brought by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) against Nawaz, represented by Kaur Maxwell.
Under UK law, a bankruptcy order is part of the personal insolvency process. It is issued to a person by the court, which makes them bankrupt. Bankruptcy orders are only published in the London Gazette when received from the Insolvency Service.
A bankrupt cannot act as a director or participate in any way in the management of a company until he is discharged from bankruptcy, unless he has obtained authorization of the court to continue to exercise his functions as administrator. He continues to be a director of several companies in the United Kingdom.
Hasan Nawaz was not available for comment. A source close to him said his legal team was looking into the matter and would respond soon.
