An earthquake of amplitude of 4.8 shook Islamabad, Rawalpindi and its suburban areas on Saturday evening, however, no victim or damage has been reported.

The tremors also felt in Murrier and in certain parts of the region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), including Balouch, Dhirkot and its adjacent areas.

The extent of the earthquake was recorded at 4.8, said the seismological center of the Pakistan meteorological department in a press release.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about eight kilometers south-east of Rawalpindi and its depth was reported at 17 kilometers, he added.

In November of last year, an earthquake of 5.3 coarse rocked the federal capital, Islamabad, and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The epicenter was located in the Hindu region of Kush in Afghanistan, a region known for its frequent seismic activities.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Pakistan, because the country is located on the border of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Large parts of South Asia are seismically active because a tectonic plate known as the Indian plate grows north in the Eurasian plate.
