KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched strict measures against individuals and businesses dumping waste on streets and footpaths.
Notices have been issued to restaurants and commercial establishments under the Sindh Local Government Act for littering in public spaces, Geo News reported Saturday.
According to the KMC spokesperson, authorities will take stern action against those who break the law by littering in public places. Violators face a fine of up to 50,000 rupees or a sentence of up to three years in prison.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said municipal inspectors would act in accordance with the law and take necessary measures to resolve the problem.
He added that three hotels had already received notices for dumping waste on sidewalks and public spaces. The establishments were warned that if the problem was not resolved within three days, legal action would follow.
The move is part of Karachi’s ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness and discourage public littering, thereby ensuring a safer and healthier environment for citizens.
