Luka Dončić against the Minnesota Timberwolves I felt like one of the more safe bets throughout the field of the playoffs. He played them a year ago. It did not end well for Minnesota.
THE Dallas Mavericks sent them home in five games. Dončić collected an average of 32.4 points in this series. He submitted Rudy Gobert Another year of mockery when he shot the change on the final possession of match 2 and cooked the defensive player of the year for a 3 -point pointer. Dončić kept the minnesota out of the Nba Finals a year ago. Surely, he launched the woods again, right?
Well … yes and no. Dončić scored 37 points in match 1 on Saturday, but his new team, the Los Angeles Lakerslost in an eruption 117-95. If you are looking for an immediate explanation for the reason why consider two of the most important teammates that Dončić had the last playoff series: Dereck Lively II And Daniel Gafford. Dončić collected 41 assists in the final of the western conference of last year, and more than half of them (22) went to his two centers. Of these 22, 10 came on a single type of pass, a lob, which is undoubtedly the best pass in the arsenal of Dončić.
Now think of the list for which Dončić is currently playing. The only center to play is always Jaxson Hayeswhich is not as good as Gafford or Lively in essentially any respect. He played eight minutes in match 1. The Lakers lost these minutes by 11 points. They played the rest of the game without center. Dončić gave only one assist. It was just the second time in his career that he was held one penny in an eliminatory match.
Suddenly, what happened on Saturday makes a little more sense. On the deadline for trade, the Lakers have almost acquired a new departure center in Charlotte Hornets Big Man Mark Williams. They stopped the agreement on his physique. Only time will tell us if it was the right decision in the big scheme of things. We don’t know how healthy Williams will be in five years. We do not know which center the Lakers will add this off -season. There are just too many variables here to make a long -term declaration. In the short term, however, Match 1 clearly did how much the Lakers even want to have a single reliable big man.
The absence has been felt in all the ways you expect. They were exceeded 42-33 during the competitive game of the match, and they granted 23 second chance points, which would have been ranked dead in the league if it was a full season average. They were upgraded in the 42-30 painting before the garbage time, and the Timberwolves themselves noticed the lack of significant deterrence in the basket.

If Hayes was more reliable with regard to the positional defense and had better hands to catch these lobs that Dončić likes to launch, JJ Redick could trust him for more than eight minutes. Obviously, in match 1 at least, he did not do it.
These lost aids are where the Lakers most feel their waist deficiencies. The Timberwolves have accumulated almost twice over 29 to 15 years. Of course, part of this was due to the 3 -point shot from Minnesota. They will no longer redo half of their 3. But the Lakers have not fired either either. They made 15 triples in match 1. They did it 31 times in the regular season and went 20-11 in these games. They were exploded on Saturday, and it makes sense in the context of the list they have and the one they face.
Lakers are built to overwhelm opponents with a shooting creation. Dončić’s judgment requires a ton of defensive resources. Engage that many makes it even more difficult to slow down LeBron James And Austin Reaves. Having these three players should always mean being able to create advantages and find discrepancies.
Dončić did it almost alone with the Mavericks last year. These great men were a large part. The container as a driver frequently meant turning a tall man to meet him, thus keeping him away from the lob against which he would protect himself ideally. Either Dončić obtains an easy bucket or its center. Without this center on the ground, Dončić becomes predictable.
His pass, almost universally, go to 3-point shooters. Lakers have a high-end shooting creation, but the shot itself? Not particularly imposing. They ranked 19th in 3 points per game and 14th as a percentage of 3 points. It does not collapse in the same way without this dangerous center. This, in turn, makes it more difficult to force defense to rotation and to give James and realizes their own opportunities to punish the offsets.
All this led to a 95 -point outing which simply does not offer a plausible path to victory. Lakers do not have Anthony Davis more. They are not built to win slugfsts. Their goal is to use their Bordeaux stars to find and torture your weakest defenders. It will not be easy without a center to force these impossible choices. The Timberwolves had the sixth best defense of Nba. They are relatively robust if they can stick to their basic defense.
Are there solutions here? Not obvious. James was a great man from Pick-And-Roll very effective in the past, especially for Kyrie Irving In Cleveland, but the Lakers did not perfection the Dončić-James with two dances for again, and even if they had done so, James finished with force and crafts. He does not have the capture radius that Gafford or Lively makes, and Dončić’s specialty launches passes, only his huge centers can catch. Jarred Vanderbilt Does not have enough hands to play this role.
None of this responds to Gobert’s problem. If the Lakers put a shooter at unreliable distance on the ground, the Timberwolves will simply put Gobert on this player, he is therefore free to play as much defense assistance by the edge as he wishes.
These are fairly repairable problems with off -season. It could be as simple as “go get a center”. But for the moment, on Saturday recalled how this team has been reunited in a hurry. The Lakers did not plan to go to the playoffs this way. The circumstances demanded it. Now Dončić faces Timberwolves with a kind of support for support entirely different from what he had a year ago, and that will require a completely different game plan to attack them.
Dončić and James are two of the most intelligent players in the history of the NBA. Reaves is not far behind it, and Redick was a regular -season creative expert. If there is a solution here, they will find it. But anything, he should probably be more conventional than last year’s approach to throw him to the big guy.
