A police officer kissed martyrdom while a terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire following an attack on police staff who kept a polio vaccination team in the southern Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Police say the martyr gendarme was deployed in service for the polio vaccination campaign when the incident occurred.
The killed terrorist was found in possession of a rocket launcher, a machine gun and two motorcycles. The authorities have also recovered a national identity card, three ATM cards and an activist smartphone.
The officials confirmed that a case had been registered at the CTD Azam Warsak police station.
Pakistan witnessed a spectacular increase in attacks, mainly in KP and Balutchistan, since the Taliban’s return to Afghanistan in 2021, Islamabad claiming that hostile groups planned their Afghan soil attacks.
The attack occurs one day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched this year the second anti-poolio campaign on this year of this year, from April 21 to April 27.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where polio is endemic.
Vaccination teams are frequently targeted by activists from Pakistan. In 2024, 20 people were killed and 53 were injured in anti-political campaigns in KP.
Earlier in February, a police official was martyred in Bajaur de KP in an attack on a polio vaccination team. Police said the manager was heading for his post when armed men on a motorcycle opened fire, killing him on the spot.
