Karachi: market data show that despite the government’s cap, the retail price of sugar to Rs164 per kilogram, traders in various parts of the country always sell the product far beyond the official price, flangling the government’s orders.
In some regions, the sugar was sold to Rs180 per kilogram during the week ending on April 24, 2025, according to the most recent SEP) report published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.
The lowest recorded price, RS164 per kg, was on the official price ceiling, while the average national price was RS168.12 per kg.
According to data on the city of the PBS, the prices of sugar varied across the country, with the highest price recorded at Rs180 per kg in Peshawar. The other cities where sugar sold over the official RS164 government ceiling per kg included Rawalpindi, where prices varied at RS175 per kg, and Karachi, where the maximum price has also reached RS175 / kg.
In Lahore, prices varied between RS164 and RS170 per kg, while in Hyderabad, the average sugar price was RS166.65 per kg. In cities like Islamabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot, prices remained at Rs170 per kg. Meanwhile, some cities, including Sargodha and Quetta, recorded prices in accordance with the government’s ceiling, at Rs164 per kg.
The federal government had previously announced the price ceiling in order to limit inflationary pressure on the essential foods of Ramadan. In March, Vice-Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said that retail prices should not exceed RS164, following a warning from the Pakistan Competition Commission (PCC) against price manipulation by Sugar Mills.
