In the middle of the climbing of regional tensions following Israeli attacks on Iranian military and nuclear installations, Pakistan advised its citizens on Friday to avoid non -essential trips to Iran and Iraq, in particular for religious pilgrimage.

“Given the evolution of the security situation in the region, Pakistan pilgrims are advised to reconsider their travel plans in Iran and Iraq,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The opinion comes in the wake of Israeli attacks against Iranian territory on Friday, which targeted high value military and nuclear sites. The attacks led to the deaths of several high Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists, which raises fears of a broader regional conflict.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered all the government services concerned to extend full support for Pakistani citizens and pilgrims currently in Iran. He called for coordinated efforts to ensure their safety and facilitate their secure return to Pakistan.

To respond to the emerging situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has created a crisis management unit to provide emergency assistance to Pakistani nationals abroad.

The Pakistan Embassy in Tehran was also responsible for staying in close contact with community members and Zaire (pilgrims) and for offering any necessary facilitation. The embassy published a dedicated emergency hotline: (+98) 2166941388.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely and has assured that other measures will be taken, if necessary, to protect the interests of its citizens abroad.
