He received a special jury in the category of the views of the Trebika Festival, “kites”, “kites” that for the first time in Walter Thompson Hernandez, asking the public to meet the project on its own conditions.
Initially, one of the interlocutors declares that “kites” are based on a true story, and the first pictures are Newsreel shots to kill a few young people by the police in Brazil. Then the film takes a deviation. Belief in the guardian angels is not necessary to enjoy it, but belief that the violent world sometimes needs a little magical realism is essential. Outwardly, a story about the conflict in Rayo de Janeiro Fellas, the film becomes a sweet and serious example of one man who tries against all difficulties to provide his community with some comfort of the injustice that swallows him.
Dovo (Daniel Fernando de Brado Doria Lima) is a small fraud tried to make Pak in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. He cannot escape the life of the gangs, although trying to start again with his partner, Larissa (Larissa Borges). In the first jump of faith, “kites” asks about her fans, Philip (Philip Augusto da Silva Suza), a companion in the Dofu who was killed by the police, appears to him as an angel, with large white wings of his back. Phil wonders about Dovo’s motives, encouraging him to live a better life and act as his lawyer. When a kites for children in Filas is canceled, Duvo decides to re -this as a way to prove an elephant – for itself – that he can act significantly in the interest of others and not only to meet his selfish needs.
Elsewhere, Dofu does not notice that Larissa has a separate life. While she knows many of his informal factors, she understands that she comes with this life. She has her secret: Larissa is in love with another woman. In a scene in which she draws her nails with her friends and talks about love and relationships, her face shines talking about falling in love. The scene gently balances the conflict and arguments that arise when Dofu meets his male friends, as if he indicated that female energy could be closer to the angels watching everyone.
With the progress of the story, the additional trustee angels seem to take care of other characters. The “kites” were built about the romantic idea and the hope that everyone has another world that takes care of them. It is refreshing that these souls have nothing to do with religion. Instead, they are people who were known to the characters one day and their loved ones, now only they are no longer among the neighborhoods. All of these angels have a warm presence and their glow does not light, even if they often speak in the sects.
Thompson Hernandez’s text is listed in a clear and direct way, making it easy to follow “kites” and understand all their sub -types. However, the director for the first time is less successful in formulating characters. Duvo only shows a complete offer. Others are lost in the background without any distinctive characters. Larissa coincides with more than just a romantic being, swinging between two people, while children (who are in the middle of the narration, because Dovo feels responsible for them) never appears more than just a collective. Their goal is to push the plot forward, rather than treat them as individuals with their hopes and dreams.
The “kites” show the angels in a unique and simple visual style. Whenever they appear, it is photographed against a fixed background, it is clear that an auxiliary, hand-drawn-is a choice of style that pumps out of reality for such a imaginary element. There are also great scenes of life in Rio, especially at night. Film photographer Michael Fernandez beautifully lights many black and brown faces, which fill “kites” with exciting shades and unforgettable silhouette.
With “kites”, Thompson-Herendez explains that he can balance multiple types within one narration. The film is both brave and realistic, such as Fellas Rio de Janeiro, while it is a sweet story with surreal touches. The film places in a violent place, but it does not show much of this brutality on the screen. Instead, “kites” play like a budget and a healing mechanism.
