The Ministry of the Energy Division introduced the Power Smart application under the “Apna meter, apni reading“The initiative to directly involve electricity consumers in the billing process and promote transparency in the system.
The application was officially launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Power division.
The Power Smart application allows consumers to take a photo of their electricity meter on a specified date and download it via the application. Monthly electricity bills will then be generated according to this image subject to the user – offering a technological solution to long -standing problems such as surfilage, reading errors and reading delays of the counter.
“With this system, consumers will not only be able to monitor their invoices, but also as guards of the meter reading process,” said the spokesperson.
One of the main advantages of the Power Smart application is its ability to protect consumers eligible for subsidies to lose financial support due to delayed or inaccurate readings.
Managers have cited the example of users consuming up to 200 electricity units, whose subsidized invoices generally amount to approximately Rs 2,330. If consumption even increases slightly above this threshold, the subsidy is withdrawn and the bill can exceed 8,000 rupees. The application guarantees that beneficiaries can keep their subsidy by submitting timely and precise readings.
Another important feature is that if a consumer subjects reading on the specified deadline, any meter reading taken after this day will not be prioritized – only the reading subject by the user will be used for billing purposes.
Initiatives like “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” aim to introduce transparency into the electrical system while allowing consumers to manage and verify their own billing. This should considerably reduce the surface, unnecessary interference and related complaints, added the spokesperson.
