ISLAMABAD: Top Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan has tendered his resignation as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), citing “multiple” FIRs and legal proceedings against him as a reason, News reported Wednesday

The politician conveyed his resignation to NA Chairman Ayaz Sadiq on Tuesday, bearing the date December 3, and appointed PTI Chairman and NA Member Advocate Gohar Ali Khan, to succeed him as the commission.

“I am writing to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. This decision has been taken after careful consideration and is necessitated by the multitude of FIRs and legal cases filed against me, which require my immediate and unreserved attention.

“Current legal challenges hinder my ability to effectively serve the Commission, and I believe it is in the best interest of the institution to allow someone with clear direction to assume this vital role,” he said. -he wrote Tuesday in his resignation.

Omar expressed confidence that Barrister Gohar will be a valuable asset to the commission due to his legal acumen, integrity and dedication.

He requested the NA President that his resignation could be processed as soon as possible and necessary arrangements made for the appointment of Barrister Gohar as a member of the JCP.

The opposition leader has been involved in a number of cases registered over allegations of terrorism, violent protests and other charges, linked to the PTI’s legal battles against the government.

He was appointed last month along with four other lawmakers from the upper and lower houses, following the reconstitution of the forum after the promulgation of the 26th constitutional amendment.

The 13-member body is headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan and consists of two senators, two MPs, three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, the senior-most judge of the constitutional judiciary, the federal minister of Law and Justice, of the lawyer. General for Pakistan, an advocate having not less than 15 years of experience in the apex court, appointed by the Bar Council of Pakistan for two years.

The JCP is responsible for appointing judges to the Supreme Court, high courts and the Federal Sharia Court, supervising the performance of high court judges and preparing their annual performance reviews.
